James Robert Twentyman (1843 – 1928) was a wealthy tea trader who made his fortune in China. In 1903 he bought the Monkhams Estate, with its 233 acres but he appeared to have little interest in occupying the property and it was not long before parts of the land were sold as building plots. Within a year of purchase the first streets were being laid out for development. When Twentyman died in 1928 his trustees sold the remaining plots for housing. This street was laid out on the former site of the 19thCentury Monkhams House which was demolished in 1930. The Broadway, Monkham’s Avenue, Monkham’s Drive, Park Avenue, King’s Avenue and Queen’s Avenue were all laid out on the estate’s grounds.
