John Quick (1748 – April 4, 1831) was a comic actor who became a favourite of King George III. He was the original Tony Lumpkin in She Stoops to Conquer, a comedy by Oliver Goldsmith, which was first performed in London in 1773. His hugely successful career allowed him to save £10,000 and he was able to live on the interest in his retirement. He resided in Hornsey Row, subsequently Will’s Row, Islington. He used to preside over a gathering held at the King’s Head tavern, Islington. He was buried beneath the old chapel-of-ease at Lower Holloway. The road which was laid out in 1838 was originally called Gordon Street.
