Margaret Lockwood (September 15, 1916 – July 15, 1990) was one of Britain’s biggest film stars of the 1930s and 1940s. Lockwood who appeared in The Lady Vanishes (1938), Night Train to Munich (1940), The Man in Grey (1943), and The Wicked Lady (1945), spent her final years in Kingston. Margaret Mary Day Lockwood was born in Karachi, British India, moving to England to attend Sydenham High School for Girls and a ladies’ finishing school in Kensington and in 1933 enrolled at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She was 12 when she made her first appearance on stage at the Holborn Empire playing a fairy in a Midsummer Night’s Dream. She started appearing in films in 1934 and after a string of hits by 1952 she was the best paid actress in Britain. However, her popularity waned and so she moved back to stage and making occasional television appearances. Her last professional appearance was as Queen Alexandra in Royce Ryton’s stage play Motherdear in 1980. She spent the last eight years of her life in seclusion living at 34 Upper Park Road, Kingston Upon Thames. She died at the Cromwell Hospital, Kensington, from cirrhosis of the liver, aged 73. She was cremated at Putney Vale Crematorium.
