Directional, running from Barking to Ilford. The name Ilford comes from a ford across the River Hyle or Hile, meaning trickling stream, the old name for the River Roding. It was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Ilefort and by the 14thCentury had become Hyleford. According to Norman Gunby in A Potted History of Ilford the name was originally Yleford, and the first known recording of the name Hile (ealden hilae) appears in AD958. This was originally called Barking Lane but changed sometime in the early 20thCentury.
