Charles Hesterman Merz (October 5, 1874 – October 14, 1940) was an electrical engineer who pioneered the use of high-voltage three-phase AC power distribution in the United Kingdom, building a system in the North East of England in the early 20thCentury that became the model for the country’s National Grid. Like the other streets nearby this was laid out over the site of the old Croydon B power station, in Valley Park Croydon where the roads have a connection with the development of electricity. The others are: Ampere Way, Faraday Way, Franklin Way, Kelvin Gardens, and Volta Way.
