Place Name
An ancient route running to Hawes Farm and other tenements, avoiding the main village of West Wickham and linking Addington Road to Red Lodge Road. Peter Leigh, a local historian, explains: “It takes its name from the Hawthorne trees. Originally the western end of Pickhurst Rise was Hawes Lane and there still is a bridge over the railway that carried the lane until it was diverted to serve an Edwardian development of houses before reaching Red Lodge Road beside the Railway Hotel.”
