Charles Grant (April 16, 1746 – October 31, 1823) served as Chairman of the East India Company. He was also an MP influential in Indian and domestic affairs who, motivated by his evangelical Christianity, championed the causes of social reform and Christian mission, particularly in India and a member of the Clapham Sect, which spoke out about the moral imperative to end slavery. The road is on land that had previously belonged to the East India Company which ran a military academy at Addiscombe House between 1809 and 1858.
