Place Name
Named after one of possibly two Anglo-Saxon Bishops of Rochester – Godwine I, who served in the role from sometime around AD994 until his death, which is thought to be in 1013. His successor was Godwine II who died sometime between 1046 and 1058. The see held the Manor of Bromley off and on after it was granted to them by King Ethlered. This street, like many others locally, is named after former Bishops of Rochester who from the 12thCentury to 1845 resided at Bromley Palace (also known as the Bishop’s Palace). It is now part of the Civic Centre.
