Friday Road, CR4

Place Name

In Daniel Defoe’s novel Robinson Crusoe, Friday was the shipwrecked adventurer’s servant who he saved from a band of cannibals. Defoe is said to have lived for a time at nearby at Tooting Old Hall. The unsubstantiated claim did at least produce a better link in that the Crusoe Farm Dairy was named after the book’s hero. It was set up appropriately enough by a descendant of the explorer Captain James Cook, one Elizabeth Taylor. Within a few years she built up one of the largest milk businesses in South London. Other nearby roads connected with Defoe are Crusoe Road, Island Road and Pitcairn Road.
