Commemorating the Battle of the Falkland Islands that took place on December 8, 1914 in the First World War. It was described as the “Royal Navy’s spectacular retribution for… the sinking of Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock’s two ships, HMS Good Hope and Monmouth at the Battle of Coronel”. The defeat had left the Falklands defenceless and was a danger to British Atlantic shipping. A Royal Naval squadron led by Vice Admiral Sir Frederick Doveton Sturdee was ordered to find and destroy the Imperial German squadron under the command of Admiral Graf von Spee. The battle was a spectacular success for the British who destroyed Spee’s protected cruisers SMS Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and light cruisers, Leipzig and Nürnberg.
