Place Name
Previously called Tenter Street East, this is one of four streets, the others being Tenter Street North, Tenter Street South and Tenter Street West that formed a square. They are all named after the ancient practice of stretching cloth during manufacture. Tenter comes from the Middle English word teinter which was the wooden frame on which the cloth is stretched and dried on hooks to keep it taut – and from where we get the term on tenterhooks.
