Place Name
This is a corruption of the old manorial name. The manor around Kingston was held by the medieval Augustan canons of Merton Priory, who owned it from 1117 until 1538. Canonbury first being mentioned in 1375. When the monastery was dissolved by Henry VIII, all its possessions were seized by the crown.
