Place Name
Directional. The name for the local area, which this street is named after, goes back to the very early 14thCentury. John Field in Place-Names of Greater London says that it was documented as Hegeton in 1348 which means it was a farmland, tun being the Old English word for farm. Less than 20 years after the first record of its name it had become Heggestone, home of the de la Hegge or de la Haye family mentioned as early as 1233-40. There was probably a small settlement before the creation of the demesne farm here. By the first half of the 16thCentury that was Hedstone; Hedstone in 1754; and finally Headstone in 1819.
