Bohun Grove, EN4

Place Name

Remembering the early 14thCentury Lord of the Manor of Enfield, Humphrey de Bohun (1276 – March 16, 1322), 4th Earl of Hereford, Earl of Essex, and Constable of England. In 1304, Edward I granted de Bohun and his wife, Elizabeth of Rhuddlan Countess of Holland and the king’s daughter, the first market charter giving them the right to hold a weekly market at Enfield and two fairs annually. However, later in the century, the Black Death struck the parish killing one tenth of its population. De Bohun’s grandfather, also an Earl of Hereford and Essex, had established the monastic order of Austen Friars named after the Augustinian monks in the City of London. Bohun Farm and Bohun Lodge were near here.
