This road used to lead to the medieval church of St Benet Sherehog dedicated to St Osyth, also known as St Sythe which was corrupted to Sise. St Osyth was born in Buckinghamshire sometime in the 7thCentury to an underking of Mercia. Her ambition to become a nun was thwarted by her father who married her off to a neighbouring king in Essex. Her husband was more interested in hunting and while away she took vows to fulfil her ambition. Upon his return her husband accepted her decision and granted her land so that she could open a convent. Tragedy struck however when sometime around AD700 the nunnery was attacked by pirates and she was beheaded. The church was razed in the Great Fire of 1666.
