King William Street, EC4N

Place Name

In honour of King William IV (August 21, 1765 – June 20, 1837) who was the reigning monarch when the street was built in 1829 as an approach road to the new London Bridge. He opened the road in 1831. His reign saw several reforms: the poor law was updated, child labour restricted, slavery abolished in nearly all of the British Empire, and the British electoral system refashioned by the Reform Act 1832.
