Johnson’s Court, EC4A

Place Name

Number 7 may have been the home of Dr Samuel Johnson between 1748 and 1759 where he compiled his famous A Dictionary of the English Language, but the naming of the street has nothing to do with him. Rather it is named after a local 16thCentury property owning merchant tailor called Thomas Johnson. It was named Mr Johnson’s Court in 1647 eight years before the great writer moved in.
