Place Name
It means the road of chaff or bran, the discarded waste product of the corn threshing that took place here in preparation for the hay and corn markets in Fenchurch Street and Gracechurch Street. It was previously recorded as Shyvethenestrat in 1257 and Sivethenelane by 1305 which mutated into Seythin Lane in 1556. It is derived from the Old English word sifetha, which literally means siftings.
