Industrial heritage. This was one of the many ropemakers’ alleys that existed on the edge of the City in the medieval period. Rope-making was an important industry, especially, but not exclusively, for shipping. It was here, in these long straight rope-walks that the hemp would be twisted into lengths of rope. The name was first recorded in 1672.
