Place Name
As with many of the streets running from Cheapside, this name reveals a long forgotten mercantile past. For it was here, from around the 14thCentury, that hosiers lived, worked and plied their wares. The tight-fitting stockings were a forerunner to the modern trouser. They came into fashion with young men keen to discard the monkish gowns worn by older generations.
