Named after Pierre de Coubertin (January 1, 1863 – September 2, 1937), the founder of the International Olympic Committee who is regarded as the father of the modern Olympic Games. Born into a French aristocratic family he came up with the idea of reviving the Olympic Games in 1889 working with Thomas Arnold, the headmaster of Rugby School who came up with a similar idea, independently. De Coubertin summed up his philosophy as: “The important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle, the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.” East Village was built on the site of the former Athletes’ Village which was redeveloped on former industrial land. Stratford underwent a huge amount of new development ahead of the 2012 London Olympic Games. Many new streets were created and named after this global celebration of sport.
