Place Name
Named after Oliver Cromwell (April 15, 1599 – September 3, 1658), the general who led Parliament’s armies against Charles I during the English Civil War and ruled as Lord Protector from 1653 until his death in 1658. He married Elizabeth Bourchier in the nearby St Giles-without-Cripplegate Church in 1620. This was part of a network of ped-ways (pedestrian routes) that were planned by architects following the bombing of the Second World War which left much of the City devastated.
