Briset Street, EC1M

Place name

This Farringdon road has undergone several name changes since it was first laid out. On Rocque’s map of 1746 it is called Bartlett Street but later became Berkley Street, after George Berkeley, 8th Baron Berkeley (1601 – August 10, 1658), who died at his house on this road. It got its final name change in 1936 to honour the Norman baron Jordan de Briset who founded the Nunnery of St. Mary, Clerkenwell, and gave the land for the building of the Priory of St. John of Jerusalem sometime around 1100.
