At the northern end of this lane stood the church of St Bartholomew-by-the-Exchange (the Royal Exchange), which was originally built in the 12thCentury. The first mention of the street was as Seint Bartilmew lane sometime around the middle of the 14thCentury, it was later recorded as Bathellmuw lane in 1553. the church was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666, then rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren. But the rebuilt church was demolished in 1840 to make way for the development of the new Royal Exchange. Saint Bartholomew was open of the 12 Apostles of Jesus, following Christ’s cruxifixction he went to spread the word and it is claimed he travelled as far afield as India. He met his death sometime around AD69 in Armenia, where tradition has it, he was skinned alive for his beliefs.
