Place Name
Named after Sir Thomas Adams (1586 – February 24, 1667/1668) who was Lord Mayor of London during the English Civil War. He held property here probably not long after he was elected master of the Worshipful Company of Drapers in 1642. As a Sheriff of the City of London in 1639 he was elevated to the Court of Aldermen and from there went on to become Lord Mayor in 1645. He remained a staunch ally of the monarch and was suspected of harbouring Charles I by the Parliamentarians. A search of his home revealed no evidence but he was locked up anyway. He survived the ordeal and was one of the small band who went to the Continent to collect Charles II for the Restoration, for which he was knighted.
