Place Name
The street is named after pharmacist Luke Howard (November 28, 1772 – March 21, 1864), a manufacturing chemist called “the father of meteorology”. He named the three principal categories of clouds cumulus, stratus, and cirrus. In 1798 he entered into partnership with William Allen to form the pharmaceutical company Allen and Howard. Howard operated the partnership’s factory built on the marshes at Plaistow. The partnership was dissolved in 1807 and Howard moved his operations to Stratford. This factory soon became the successful industrial chemicals and pharmaceuticals company later known as Howards and Sons. He also lived in Chesterton House in Balaam Street.
