Thomas Legh Claughton (November 6, 1808 – July 25, 1892) was the first Bishop of St Albans, which was formed in 1877 and initially covered Essex. Claughton had previously been a professor of poetry at Oxford University from 1852 to 1857 and Bishop of Rochester, from which his new diocese had been formed. Claughton soon found himself clashing with one of his vicars, George Godsell the first vicar of St. Andrew’s, in Plaistow, after it established a distinctive ceremonial tradition.
