Previously Fisher Street. Bernard Cassidy (August 17, 1892 – March 28, 1918), was a First World War soldier who was awarded the highest military honour for gallantry. Cassidy grew up in Watford Road, Victoria Dock. He was a second lieutenant in the Lancashire Fusiliers and was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross after giving his life to defend a vital line in Arras, France, from an overwhelming German onslaught during the Spring Offensive. This is one of around 40 streets in Newham that carry both the first and surname of people.
