Place Name
Thought to be apocryphal this unusual name is said to be a revival of the area’s old name of Twig Folly. The story goes that a basket maker, possibly named Twig after the materials he used, became vexed one day when he saw boys stealing fruit from his land. Taking umbrage at the theft he grabbed his gun and shot one of the lads. Fearing that his land would be confiscated as repayment he signed the lease over to a friend, on condition that he would get his property back when he had served his sentence. But the friend reneged on the promise and instead developed the land for his own gain – naming it Twig Folly for his former pal’s trust in him.
