Place Name
Named in honour of Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts, 1st Baroness Burdett-Coutts (April 21, 1814 – December 30, 1906), a philanthropist who descended from the Coutts banking family. In 1837 she became one of the wealthiest women in England when she inherited her grandfather’s fortune of around £1.8 million. In 1862 she had homes built for local workmen and their families at nearby Columbia Square and seven years later, Columbia Market in 1869 to provide cheap food. See also Burdett Road, E3.
