Place Name
Named after the area which itself describes the gentle slope from the banks of the River Thames and red cliff, a considerable exaggeration, even the colour makes no particular sense. But it has been in use since at least 1294 when it was written down as Le Rede Clive, a few years later in 1305 it was Radclyve and in 1442, Reedcliffe, before mutating into Ratclyffe in 1524.
