Place Name
Named after the sign of a former galleried inn which was first mentioned in records by 1637, a reference to the coat of arms of the Worshipful Company of Turners which features a Catherine Wheel between two columns. By 1722 the name had been corrupted as Cat and Wheel Alley. The inn was gutted by fire in 1895 and later demolished.
