Place Name
Named after the former University School that was located near here. The school is said to have been opened in 1889, originally as Cottingham College after its founder L J Cottingham. Sometime in the 1920s the college split into two parts: Cottingham College, to teach commercial and trades, and University School, for grammar pupils. University School moved in 1937 to new premises in Brampton Road. But both schools were bombed out in 1940. University School moved to 232 Upton Road South and closed in 1988.
