Place Name
Named after the church which was opened in 1934 after locals complained that the nearest parish church, St Paul’s, was too far away. The name of the church came from the small Mission church on Hythe Road that was used as a temporary place of worship while the new one was built. St Oswald was an Anglo-Saxon king of Northumbria who helped spread Christianity in the region. He was known for his generosity to the poor. When he was killed during a battle his arms and legs were chopped off and his body hanged. It was later said that the ground around where he hung was the source of miracles.
