Named after Philip Arthur Larkin (August 9, 1922 – December 2, 1985) whose works include This Be The Verse, The Whitsun Weddings and MCMXIV. It is one of a number of roads named after popular poets, forming the Poets Estate which was laid out on a former playing field for Purley County Grammar School for Girls. Nearby streets include Betjeman Close, Rosetti Gardens, Shelley Close and Stanley Close.
