Heathfield Road, DA6

Place Name

Today it would appear to be in the centre of urban development, but as recently as 1900, this street was on the edge of town and laid out over the virgin heathland that gives the wider area of Bexleyheath its name. Paul Cavill in his New Dictionary of English Field Names, the standard reference on the subject, says the name means “uncultivated and unproductive land, overgrown with heather and scrub”.
