Named after Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale (January 8, 1864 – January 14, 1892), the eldest son of King Edward VII, who at the time was the Prince of Wales. A controversial figure he was linked to both the Cleveland Street scandal and, wildly, as a suspect in the Jack the Ripper murders. His death from pneumonia during the influenza pandemic of 1889 – 1892 less than a week after his 28th birthday stunned the nation, shops closing as a mark of respect and many local authorities rushing to name streets in his honour. The road is featured on maps of 1900 but not named.
