Back Lane, DA5

Place name

This was Bexley’s second road, used as an alternative to the main thoroughfare in days before paving and Tarmac became standard. Until then roads were little more than dirt tracks which in poor weather would soon become impassably rutted or muddy. As surfacing on highways improved, the name came back to imply inferior.
