Remembering the hamlet which was subsumed into Kenley in the 20thCentury. The name Waddington goes back to Saxon times, meaning wheat hill. It was first recorded in the Anglo Saxon charters of AD880 as Hwætedune – hwæten (wheat) and dūn (hill). It was variously spelt in as Watedone in 1279; Whatendon in 1206; Whatyngdon in 1325; and Whadington in 1558.
