Place Name
Named after Anthony Wilson Thorold who leased Selsdon House when he became Bishop of Rochester. At the time the estate was in the ownership of Mabel Smith, later Greville, having inherited it from her great-grandfather. But since she was not yet of age, her mother rented it out. On turning 21, Smith married the Honourable Alwyn Greville and spent her honeymoon at Selsdon House. Shortly afterwards Thorold was promoted to become the Bishop of Winchester and no longer needed to live in Selsdon. Smith decided to sell most of her Selsdon estate. Thorold died in 1895.
