Place Name

Named after Tony Slade, an amateur footballer who was part of the Tooting and Mitcham United Football Club squad which notched up a series of notable wins in the 1950s and 1960s. He was a veteran of the famous 1958/59 FA Cup run, Slade spent six years with the club, that he joined as a youngster, playing inside right. When he moved he played half a dozen games with Carshalton before settling into a six season stint with the Kingstonian’s first team. Later clubs including a season with Wealdstone, Leatherhead, Dulwich Hamlet, and Hendon in midfield or striker roles. Career highlights included two FA Amateur Cup semi final appearances with Kingstonian and Wealdstone. This is one of four roads that honours former star players of the club nicknamed The Terrors whose Sandy Lane ground was here from 1932 until the 1990s when it moved to The Hub at Bishopsford Road. They moved again to a new ground called Imperial Fields in 2002.
