Place Name
A reference to the novel Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe who is said to have lived for a time at nearby at Tooting Old Hall. Pitcairn being the remote Pacific island where many of the mutineers of HMS Bounty settled and so would have been considered a suitable desert island of the type the unfortunate Crusoe could have washed up on. The unsubstantiated Defoe claim did at least produce a better link in the Crusoe Farm Dairy, set up appropriately enough by a descendant of the explorer Captain James Cook, one Elizabeth Taylor. Within a few years she built up one of the largest milk businesses in South London. Other nearby roads connected with Defoe are Crusoe Road, Friday Road and Island Road.
