Place Name
Mitcham is Old English in origin – micel and häm – and means big settlement. Before the Romans and Saxons were present, there was a Celtic settlement in the area, with evidence of a hill fort in the Pollards Hill area. John Field in Place-Names of Greater London speculates: “large village possibly by contrast with Streatham or with the several small places with häm names in Croydon. The name was first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Michelham and became Micham sometime around the middle of the 12thCentury.
