Place Name
Named after Robert Marsham, nephew of Viscount Sydney who was Lord of the Manor of Chislehurst. Marsham was the son of the Earl’s elder sister, Mary Elizabeth. Under the terms of the Earl’s will, he had to change his name to Robert Marsham-Townshend. He was not, however, able to inherit the titles of Viscount and Earl Sydney, which became extinct on the Earl’s death in 1890.
