Place Name
Named after a former lord of Coulsdon Manor, Sir Edward Darcy, who inherited the estate from his uncle Sir Francis Carew in 1589. This in turn was passed to his second son, also called Edward, after Sir Edward senior’s eldest son and heir, Robert, died just four years after his father in 1612. Edward junior was just eight years old when the manor became his and it remained in his hands until his death in 1663. But having no male heirs of his own the lands were passed by Charles II to Jerome, the second Earl of Portland.
