Named after the former Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman (August 28, 1906 – May 19, 1984) whose works include Death in Leamington, Slough and Christmas. It is one of a number of roads named after popular poets, forming the Poets Estate which was laid out on a former playing field for Purley County Grammar School for Girls. Nearby streets include Larkin Close, Rosetti Gardens and Shelley Close.
