Place Name
Named after John Walter who ran a smithy here. Until the end of the 18th Century this part of the High Street from The Bell Inn northwards, was comprised land for Grete House. In 1797 a temporary concentration camp called Prison Yard was built here on lands of the former Grete House to house French prisoners of war.
