Place Name
Named after the Tweedy family part of the old Scottish clan, named after the River Tweed. Having moved south a branch of the family settled first in Essex before moving to Yorkshire. They returned south, settling in Bromley in the 18th Century. Colonel George Tweedy made his fortune as a member of the Honourable East India Company and lived at Bromley House. John Newman Tweedy lived at Widmore House (which stood on the site later used for the old Town Hall buildings), and his son Arthur Hearne Tweedy, at Widmore Lodge. The road was developed in the 1880s along the line of an old footpath.
