Place Name
This road was laid out following World War Two and takes its name from the nearby Burnt Ash Lane, it means village green at the ash tree. Although the area was once covered in ash trees this may be a rather fanciful description on the part of the developers or local council as there does not appear to have been any village green here originally. In Place-Names of Greater London John Field writes: “[It is] formed by erroneous division of M[iddle] E[niglish] atten ashe, the first word signifying ‘at the’.”
