Place Name
Named after the nearby Holwood House estate, the former home of William Pitt the Younger, who had served as Prime Minister. The name of the road is formed of two Old English words holth and wudu meaning a wood in a valley or hollow. It was built along a footpath that ran through Ninhams Wood. Pitt at one time had thoughts of marrying his near neighbour William Eden, 1st Baron Auckland’s daughter.
